Mayor’s staff on Jan. 7 told the Birmingham City Council the city is operating an emergency warming station with partner Jimmy Hale Mission during a period of sub-freezing temperatures and outlined other operational changes launching this month.
The mayor’s office said the nightly warming station will be open through Thursday, Jan. 9, at Jimmy Hale Mission, 3420 Second Avenue North, with doors opening at 6 p.m. The city said free shuttle service from the intersection of Park Place and 20th Street North will run 6–7 p.m. to assist people with mobility challenges. The announcement covered outreach through street teams, social media and media releases to help reach unhoused residents.
City staff also announced a new neighborhood-based household garbage schedule that began Jan. 6: each neighborhood will have one dedicated weekly household pickup day; recycling collection will be every other week on the same day for households enrolled in the curbside recycling cart program. Bulk trash pickup is moving to every other week. The mayor’s office said pickup schedules are published at birminghamal.gov/pickup and on city social channels.
In addition, the mayor’s office said the city will host a food-truck town hall on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the Birmingham Museum of Art to explain recently changed ordinances and codes affecting food-truck operations; staff posted a resource at birminghamal.gov/foodtruck.
The mayor also briefly reviewed public-safety improvements and enforcement activity around New Year’s Eve, including BPD patrols and business compliance work; the mayor’s full report on violence-reduction recommendations was discussed separately with the council and released online.
