The Sawyer County Land, Water and Forestry Resources Committee heard a presentation from Amy Wiersma of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey proposing a two‑year groundwater mapping project for Sawyer County.
Wiersma told the committee the mapping would identify aquifers, flow directions, soil permeability and recharge rates; the product could be used to manage wetlands, landfill sites and protect drinking water sources. Because Sawyer County is already scheduled for surficial mapping and LCO (Lac Courte Oreilles) is planning concurrent groundwater mapping, the presentation said a two‑county coordinated schedule could lower costs.
Committee staff estimated the county cost at about $106,000 over two years; a nearby county (Burnett) had paid $250,000 for similar mapping. Conservation staff said they would request funding as a capital improvement program (CIP) item in the department budget.
The committee did not vote to appropriate funds at the meeting; members asked for additional information and staff said they would include the request in the upcoming CIP process for consideration.
