County board backs resolution supporting Apostle Islands national park designation

The resolution originated in the economic development committee, which recommended forwarding the board a resolution endorsing the national park designation as beneficial for county tourism and economic development. Committee members and an economic development representative said the designation could increase visitation and visibility for the region.
During discussion board members noted Bayfield County had adopted a resolution opposing the designation because of concerns about infrastructure, housing and workforce capacity. The board’s resolution is advisory and not binding on federal decision‑making.
A motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Supervisor Ringheimer (identified in committee as Rickheimer) and seconded by Supervisor Duffy. The motion passed; one board member voiced “nay” during the final vote but the motion carried.
The economic development committee packet cited a regional tourism study and recommended collaboration among local stakeholders to manage anticipated visitor impacts should the designation occur.
