The South Padre Island Special Events Committee approved $7,500 in marketing support for South Padre Pride weekend after hearing from organizer Duvie (Duvie) Woods, who argued the multi‑day event generates hotel room nights and local spending.
Woods, who said she owns the Upper Deck Hotel and Bar and has prior experience producing large events, described last year’s attendance and a university‑compiled impact analysis. “We had approximately ... 292.6 room nights in total,” Woods told the committee, and she said the group’s internal counts showed broad local spending at restaurants and other businesses.
Staff recommended $5,000 in marketing support; committee members discussed expanding the Pride event’s reach into Mexico and nearby states, and some members suggested the committee meet organizers halfway on funding. A motion to grant $7,500 in marketing funds passed on a voice vote.
Organizers said they will expand advertising into Mexican markets and work to add events to encourage multi‑night stays. Staff requested a post‑event report documenting room nights, attendance and sponsorship development.
