Romulus resident urges fair enforcement of vehicle and equipment storage rules; council schedules Jan. 13 study session

A Romulus resident who identified himself as John Nathaniel Sr. told the City Council on Dec. 23 that several neighbors keep commercial equipment, trailers and food trucks on residential lots and asked the city to ensure consistent enforcement.
“ I'm on 6020 Washington Street… I have a couple of trailers and I've got a truck on my property,” Nathaniel said during the public comment portion. He said his driveway can accommodate a 29-foot camper, an E-350 van, a car and additional spaces and that he has a fenced rear lot. He said he received a notice about commercial equipment but not a citation.
Council members responded that the planning department had drafted a zoning amendment addressing storage of recreational vehicles, commercial vehicles and automobiles in residential districts and that a 30-minute study session on the draft will be held Monday, Jan. 13, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. Councilwoman Roscoe invited Nathaniel to the study session and offered to have staff contact him after the holidays to discuss equitable enforcement.
Why it matters: Several Romulus residents described in the meeting record as “entrepreneurs” keep commercially used vehicles onsite. The study session will allow council and staff to examine options for balancing residents’ ability to operate small businesses from home with neighborhood quality-of-life concerns and consistent code enforcement.
What the resident said and the council response
- Resident (John Nathaniel Sr.) described multiple commercial vehicles and trailers on his property and said nearby homeowners have similar equipment. He said he had received a notice from the city concerning a camper and commercial equipment within the last six months but not a ticket.
- Council and staff said they will follow up. Councilwoman Roscoe offered to contact the resident after the Christmas break and reminded the public the zoning study session is set for Jan. 13, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
