Commissioners approve consent agenda and multiple contracts, grants and road projects including GTIB application

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 approved a multi-item consent agenda and a slate of administrative and capital contracts, including three road and drainage construction awards and a GTIB loan/grant application for Technology Ridge Parkway/Airport Spur work.
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 approved a range of consent and administrative items including grants, concession contracts, transit safety updates and multiple infrastructure contracts.
On the consent agenda the board approved: an update to the FTA Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan for CATS; budget amendments totaling $49,413 to continue multi-year grant projects; acceptance of a $2,380 Atlanta Hawks grant for youth basketball and the associated budget amendment; contract amendments and new annual agreements for park concessions; renewal of an agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. to supply certain animal-health products to the county shelter; and a public hearing set for Jan. 20 on proposed amendments to the county animal-control ordinance (Chapter 10, Article 2, Section 27C). The consent agenda passed unanimously.
The board also approved individual items presented by the county manager and department directors: an updated fire-and-emergency-services intergovernmental agreement with the City of Nelson (5-year term, automatic renewal); a 10-year lease extension (with an automatic 5-year renewal) with Empower Cherokee to continue occupation of the county-owned day-training center at 1229 Univerta Road in lieu of rent in exchange for services to individuals with disabilities; purchase of an additional 75 terabytes of government cloud backup storage (to increase the county’s capacity to 195 TB) because of unforeseen data growth from public-safety and judicial sources; and a three-year agreement with Jeff Dobson & Associates to manage the county’s annual surplus auction.
On capital and road work, the board awarded construction contracts to low bidders for several projects: culvert replacement in Hidden Branch subdivision ($1.514 million), intersection improvements at Damascus Road and Upper Bethany Road ($1.702 million), and a roundabout at Batesville Road and Sugar Pike Road ($1.037 million). The board also approved resolutions supporting an application to the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) for loan and grant funding for Phases 4–5 of the Technology Ridge Parkway and the Airport Road spur to provide access to economic-development property; officials said the GTIB application is due Jan. 14, 2025, with decisions expected in June.
The board approved a developer request to designate streets in the Sanctuary Farm subdivision as private, and accepted award of the airport-spur/Technology Ridge planning funding request to proceed with grant/loan applications. All of the county-manager items were approved by unanimous vote.
By approving those items, the board cleared contracts and authorized staff to proceed with procurement, permitting and required follow-up tasks for each project. Individual project schedules and funding sources were discussed in department-level materials; the board’s votes conveyed authorization to finalize contracts and to include the GTIB application materials in the county’s requests for state infrastructure funding.
