The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Retired Colonel John Thompson to the county Board of Ethics at its Jan. 7 meeting.
Commissioners said several strong candidates had applied to fill the position that the board votes to fill. Commissioner Weatherby nominated John Thompson; Commissioner West seconded the motion. The board recited Thompson’s residency in Cherokee County, his retirement rank of colonel and a background the board described as including special-operations leadership; the board also noted Thompson’s current employment as Director of Risk Management for Cox Communications.
The motion carried unanimously. The Board of Ethics oversees ethical conduct for county officials, boards and, to some extent, county employees; the commissioners noted they hope the board rarely needs to act but that it is important to have qualified members if issues arise.
No further public comments or conditions were attached to the appointment at the meeting; staff will process the appointment according to the county’s board-appointment procedures.
