At its Jan. 7 meeting the Glen Heights City Council elected Councilmember Cornell Benford as mayor pro tem.

After nominations from the dais, members cast written ballots that were collected and read aloud by staff. The mayor reported the tally as 4 votes for Councilmember Benford and 3 votes for Councilmember Travis J. Bruton. The council then moved, seconded and approved a motion in open session to confirm Councilmember Benford as mayor pro tem.

The mayor pro tem acts in the mayor’s absence or inability to perform official duties. Council did not detail a separate term length during the meeting; the city’s code of ordinances states the council elects the mayor pro tem after the council is seated following elections.
