MPO adopts regional Safety Action Plan to qualify for federal safety funds

The Lubbock MPO adopted a Safety Action Plan Oct. 21 that combines the city’s draft corridors and county-level work to create an MPO-level plan intended to help qualify projects for federal safety funding.
The Transportation Policy Committee for the Lubbock Metropolitan Planning Organization adopted an MPO Safety Action Plan Oct. 21 that compiles corridor priorities from the City of Lubbock and intersection and county priorities identified by regional partners.
Martin Lucero explained staff aligned the MPO plan with the city’s draft safety plan and regional work to avoid duplicating federally funded planning efforts. He said the MPO combined high-priority corridors identified by the City of Lubbock (including Broadway, New Q and Quaker) with projects from the county-level evaluation so the MPO’s plan captures projects across the planning boundary.
Adoption will make the MPO eligible to compete for federal safety funds and allow staff to identify projects for future TIP programming. Mr. Warren moved and Councilmember McDonald seconded a motion to adopt Resolution 2025-514, the committee voted and the resolution passed unanimously.
Lucero said the plan draws from city and regional analyses and that the MPO will continue coordinating with local jurisdictions as projects are prioritized and prepared for funding applications.
