County officials updated the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 22 that a mold problem at the Weeksworth building has been remediated, allowing Sussex County Transit to resume operations there and paving the way for the Office of Public Health Nursing to relocate back into the facility.
The director reported that the mold resulted from a faulty faucet on the building's front that caused deterioration and water intrusion. Transit staff had been relocated during remediation; transit operations have returned to the site. Public Health Nursing will be moved in after furniture installation expected next week, the director said, and a contractor is scheduled this spring to replace the building façade to prevent future leaks.
Commissioners were told the remediation required removing staff temporarily from affected areas and reorganizing office space while repairs took place. No dollar amount for remediation, a schedule beyond the furniture delivery, nor a contractor name for the façade replacement were provided during the public update.
What was said and when
During the administrative report, the director told the board: "We had a significant mold issue ... caused by a faulty faucet ... We had to evacuate the transit office, completely remediate that area. Public Health Nursing was already in a revision mode, so we had to shift them out and move transit in ... the good news is all the mold remediation is complete. Transit is in and back up in operations." The director added that furniture would be delivered next week to prepare for the nursing office re-occupancy and that contractors will replace the façade in spring to fix the leakage source.
What remains unspecified
The public update did not specify the remediation contractor, the total remediation cost, a detailed timeline for the façade work beyond "in the spring," or whether any services were disrupted for clients of the public health nursing office while the move occurred. The director characterized the remediation as complete and transit as operational from the building at the time of the meeting.
Context
The Weeksworth building houses county services including transit and public health nursing. Commissioners previously toured the facility and were briefed on operational impacts; this update confirmed a remediation outcome and next steps to prevent recurrence.
