Library staff reported on programming and facility updates at the Jan. 9 council meeting and asked for two operational improvements: a live feed of security cameras at the circulation desk for staff monitoring and a mass-text messaging system to contact patrons.
The librarian described changes to the winter reading challenge (expanded age ranges), a dragon-drawing contest for all ages (advertised to the service area), and completion of Room B renovations (flooring and wall coverings installed). The library serves Fountain Green as well as nearby communities (Moroni, Wells and Chester). Staff requested a live camera-view for librarians at the public desk to improve safety monitoring in the renovated rooms; city staff said the city will be revamping cameras in the coming months and that the library could likely use an on-site computer to view the camera feed.
The librarian also requested a mass-text messaging capability to notify patrons of events and closures. Staff indicated they had discussed options and would review costs and bring proposals back to council. Additional follow-ups noted: replacement of a noisy emergency-light battery wiring connection in the ceiling (now fixed), furniture-storage wall protection to prevent damage from stacked chairs, and other minor facility items.
Why this matters Live camera monitoring at the circulation desk and a text-notification system could improve patron safety, allow staff to react more quickly to incidents in meeting rooms, and increase public awareness and participation in library programs.
What’s next IT and public-works staff will assess the camera revamp and the feasibility of providing a live feed at the library desk; staff will also present options and cost estimates for a mass-text system at a future meeting.
