Montezuma County commissioners discussed a resolution on Jan. 6 to authorize a small checking account for the sheriff—s office to reimburse fees when service of process or similar costs cannot be completed.
Robert Dobry, speaking for the sheriff—s office, described the proposal as "basically like a petty cash type checking account where it's funded from the general fund and then as it's spent down, it can be, it can be, refunded, refilled when necessary." He said the account would be used "to repay fees that have been paid for service that was unable to be served, for papers and things that were unable to be served." Dobry added the county auditor advised this structure "is the best way to make sure that everything's hitting our books and also that people can be paid back these reimbursements in a reasonable time."
When asked about the initial balance, Dobry said, "A thou a thousand. It's funded with $1,000." Commissioners raised no substantive objections during the workshop.
The board did not vote on the measure at the workshop; a commissioner said, "We'll take care of it tomorrow," indicating the resolution will be acted on at the next meeting.
