Casino Garden Club asks Glynn County to install interpretive sign linking Neptune Park to Tabby cabins

Casino Garden Club representatives asked the Glynn County Board of Commissioners at a work session Oct. 21 to approve installation assistance for a 36-by-24-inch interpretive sign in Neptune Park that would link visitors to the Hamilton Plantation Tabby slave cabins.

Casino Garden Club President Sally Chego told commissioners the sign is already professionally fabricated, mounted on a durable metal stand and includes a QR code that links to a map showing the location of the Tabby cabins on Saint Simons Island. "This sign would be a permanent high-quality marker that ties together key pieces of our local heritage," Chego said.

The club said the sign would cost Glynn County nothing; Casino Garden Club asked only for help with installation. Yvonne Williams, the club—9s public relations chairman, described the cabins and gardens as a classroom for local school groups and said the project would expand educational outreach. "The Hamilton Plantation offers unique classroom opportunities," Williams said, noting docent tours, trolley tours and school visits.

Chego told the commission the club has stewarded the Hamilton Plantation Tabby cabins for more than 90 years and that the property was deeded to the club in 1950 after an earlier 1932 county arrangement permitting the club to meet at the site. She asked the board to support installing the interpretive marker near the Neptune Park flagpole, and also recommended adding a wayfinder label on Kings Way directing visitors to the Tabby cabins by arrow.

Commissioner Duncan, identified by the clerk as the item sponsor, praised the club—9s student outreach and encouraged commissioners to visit the site. No formal vote was taken during the work session; commissioners thanked the presenters and said staff would follow up on installation logistics.

The presentation did not include a formal installation timeline or specific county staff assignment for the work; Casino Garden Club said it has been coordinating with county staff member Lisa Grianus and that Grianus supports the project.
