The Kuna City Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 28 recommended approval of a zoning text amendment to clarify and limit the locations and standards for pole signs in the city.
Doug Hansen, planning and zoning director, described the proposed amendment as a code change to “better serve the intent of the sign code to protect property values and create an attractive community while encouraging creative, readable, and uncluttered and well maintained signage.” Under the draft amendment, permanent pole signs would be limited to the north–south Highway 69 (Meridian Road) corridor and only allowed in C‑2 (area commercial) and C‑3 (service commercial) zones within that corridor. Special‑use permit approval would be required for all pole‑sign construction.
When asked for the city definition of a pole sign, Hansen said a pole sign is “a sign erected on a pole like structure with the predominance of the square footage being placed on top, at or above 30 feet in height.” The proposed amendment removes the previous 30‑foot distinction and establishes a single pole‑sign standard; staff clarified that smaller, temporary ground signs or pylon signs remain classified separately and would not be treated as permanent pole signs.
No members of the public signed up to testify. A commissioner moved to recommend approval of the text amendment with the conditions in the staff report; the motion passed unanimously. The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for final action.
