County staff used the Oct. 28 meeting to update supervisors on operations across secondary roads, emergency management, waste transport and elections.
Secondary Roads reported a maintainer rolled into a ditch on 40th Street near 7052 40th Street; the operator was not injured and the county checked fluids and started the machine. Staff also announced a preconstruction meeting for the BAK1 project scheduled Friday at Wright’s shop and said Iowa DOT notified the county that B40 is no longer being used as a detour for the Highway 18 project.
Staff said they will bring proposed engine‑braking ordinance locations to a future meeting for board action and invited supervisors to a Nov. 21 safety meeting at the Nature Center. The department is advertising an open position at the Lakota shop.
Emergency Management reported an attorney had reviewed a lease and the commission will forward issues for board consideration; staff also described a plan to install three weather cameras (Swea City, Fenton and a third site such as West Bend or Ledyard if needed). Staff said two cameras would be grant‑funded and adding a third camera would cost about $7,000.
Solid‑waste transportation was raised: the county’s transportation agreement with the Kossuth Waste Management Association to haul garbage to Lake Mills and recycling to Minneapolis is expiring in December. Staff said Patton Enterprises is performing satisfactorily and recommended exercising the contract extension option for another three years; the extension would include a CPI adjustment equivalent to about a 30% increase from 2020 to 2025. Staff will present more details for board action at a future meeting.
Auditor Tammy summarized an ISAC (Iowa State Association of Counties) offer to host a two‑hour town‑hall in any of the 99 counties in 2026. Supervisors discussed target audiences, timing (summer/fall preferred), and topic suggestions including government relations and group health and wellness programs. The auditor will submit preferences to ISAC.
