Kossuth County awards East Cylinder and Hutchins gravel‑pit leases to highest bidders

The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors awarded agricultural leases for two county‑owned gravel pits at its Oct. 28 meeting.
For the East Cylinder pit (the active mining area described by staff, listed at approximately 14.4 acres), the board accepted the high bid from Todd Schneiders at $122.75 per acre for a three‑year lease beginning next March. Staff said rent for the lease will be paid half in the spring and half in the fall; the packet referenced a prior lease at $125 per acre for comparison.
For the Hutchins pit (located between Highway 18 and Old Highway 18, west of Hutchins and east of Wesley), staff reported two bids: Cody Dornbier at $1,700 per year and Katie Patton at $3,000 per year. The board approved the three‑year lease to Patton.
County roads staff told supervisors there may be fencing needs at the Hutchins site and that the county — as landowner — will work with the tenant and neighboring landowners to address access and fencing. "There’s going to be some need for some work on that," staff said when describing the Hutchins parcel.
Motion to approve the East Cylinder lease was made by Supervisor Garman and seconded by Supervisor Wachter. Motion to approve the Hutchins lease was made by Supervisor Wachter and seconded by Supervisor Hawes. Both motions passed by voice vote.
