Board members heard a student moment on Oct. 28 from players on Boulder Valley School District’s inaugural all‑girls flag‑football team, who described building the team from student organizing to a playoff run.
Avery Kennedy, a Monarch High School senior, said she played wide receiver and safety and thanked coaches and district staff who supported the team launch. "We just wanna thank Brandy for giving us the opportunity to come out here," Kennedy said, referring to district staff coverage of the team.
Player Elliot Shinn, also a Monarch senior, and Addie, a Centaurus senior, told the board the team formed after students gathered interest lists and pressed district staff and athletic directors to support a season outside the district’s usual two‑year athletic‑review cycle. The students credited community coverage and parents with helping them win approval to play.
"We got to playoffs in our inaugural season... Our record was, 8‑2 for the season," one athlete said, noting the team won its first playoff round and reached the second round.
Coaches and board members praised the students’ initiative. Superintendent Dr. Anderson thanked the students and turned the meeting over to them to share video and reflections on the experience.
Ending note. Students said the team helped create cross‑school community among players from Monarch, Centaurus and other district high schools and expressed hope that more girls will join the sport at middle and elementary levels in coming years.
