District welcomes new student board representatives from Eastridge, Woodbury and Park

Superintendent Julie Nielsen introduced three student board representatives at the Oct. 2 workshop meeting and asked them to share why they sought the leadership role.
Andrew Chastain, student board representative from Eastridge High School, told the board he wanted to "advocate for students who feel more like, they can't speak up for themselves" and to help create more inclusive spaces across the district. He said he also hoped to use the position to network with representatives from other schools.
Matilda Samuel, representing Woodbury High School, said she sought the role to be "a voice for other people" and to help students who feel unsure how to raise issues. She described involvement in student leadership and clubs including Black Student Union, UNICEF, student council, Key Club and student ambassadors.
Tayah Alvarenga introduced herself by video from Park High School and said she plays soccer and basketball; she told the board she was excited to provide insight on behalf of the Park student body and described participation in student council and honor societies. The superintendent said student representatives will attend workshop meetings where discussions are less formal and where student voice can be better integrated into agenda items such as literacy.
Ending: Board members welcomed the students and said they would invite student representatives to contribute during appropriate workshop agenda items rather than during formal business meetings.
