Superintendent brings first reading of several administrative and graduation-policy updates

Nielsen said most 300-series policies under review contained only minor or grammatical changes, and that several items'''policy 302 (superintendent), 303 (superintendent selection), 304 (superintendent contract duties and evaluation), 305 (policy implementation) and 306 (administrator code of ethics)'''had no suggested substantive changes from the policy committee.
Policy 307 (records-retention) was recommended for deletion by the policy committee because it is governed by Minnesota statute 138.17 and the state archives' general records-retention schedule; the committee concluded an MSBA model policy duplication was unnecessary. Nielsen said staff suggested the deletion because retention is covered by state statute and the Minnesota State Archives schedules.
Policy 6.13 (graduation requirements) included legal updates: the committee added a citation and made cleanup edits, added a reference to Grade 8 algebra under one provision and amended language to clarify a personal finance requirement so that students have the opportunity to take the course by the time they reach eleventh or twelfth grade.
The item was presented as a first reading; no vote was taken. Staff said the policy committee had reviewed the drafts and that the revised language will return for a second reading and action.
Ending: The board will receive the policies for a subsequent reading and formal action after the committee and staff finalize recommended language.
