Public-works update: Well 4 rehab shows early gains; sewer-inspection work identifies targeted repairs

Public-works staff updated the council on water and wastewater operations on July 24, reporting recent maintenance, a Well 4 rehabilitation and sewer-line video inspections funded in part by a Virginia Department of Health grant.
Staff said combined water treatment met town demand with an average daily production rate of about 126,000 gallons and a combined monthly finished volume near 3.8 million gallons. Well 4 was taken out of service for rehabilitation for about two weeks; staff installed a new pump, lowered the pump approximately 190 feet, replaced associated wiring and piping and performed an acid treatment to strip mineral buildup. After reassembly and transducer monitoring staff said they are seeing signs the well is recharging better.
During the Well 4 outage staff increased use of Well 3 and collected additional pumping and flow data. Staff also said they changed transducer instrumentation to standardize depth-to-water-level reporting across wells and will continue to analyze results.
On wastewater, the plant averaged about 112,000 gallons discharged per day with a monthly finished volume roughly in the mid-3-million-gallon range. Staff ordered two new equalization-basin pumps with expected delivery in about five weeks and said they continue sourcing replacement pumps and other equipment.
A sewer-video inspection project completed recently produced actionable findings. Crews rehabilitated two manholes near the end of Steeplechase at North J Street where groundwater was entering manholes; repairs should reduce infiltration and inflow to the sewer collection system. Staff said they will now evaluate the video to identify the most urgent repair needs across the system.
Council members asked technical questions about well depths and pump suspension. Staff provided the approximate depths for pumps at two wells (well L pump at about 330 feet below grade and well P at about 350 feet below grade) and said Well 4 is back in daily use with no residual issues from the acid treatment.
Staff noted that these maintenance and data-collection efforts are helping the town better target longer-term rehabilitation and capital needs.
