Sunset Council adopts ordinance to add bundled recycling program, effective July 1, 2025 or upon can delivery

Sunset City Council on Jan. 7 approved Ordinance 2025-01, an amendment to Chapter 3 of the Sunset City Code to add a bundled recycling program. The ordinance takes effect July 1, 2025, or once recycling cans are delivered to all residents, whichever occurs later.

The change to the city code was put to a roll-call vote after a brief public hearing produced no speakers. Councilmember Wrigley moved the ordinance; Councilmember Carlson seconded. In the roll call recorded at the meeting, Councilmember Wrigley, Councilmember Smalley and Councilmember Carlson voted yes. The mayor announced the motion approved by unanimous vote of members present; two council members had been excused earlier in the meeting.

The ordinance text submitted to the council amends the city’s collection rules to incorporate a bundled recycling program into the municipal code’s provisions on solid waste, green waste and recyclable materials. The motion as read at the meeting set the effective date as July 1, 2025, or upon delivery of recycling cans to all residents. City staff and council members thanked office staff for their work preparing the ordinance.

Implementation details discussed during the meeting were limited to the effective-date condition tied to delivery of recycling cans; no further operational specifics (such as vendor name, service fees, or schedule changes) were presented during the public hearing or vote. The council did not record additional amendments to the ordinance during the meeting.
