Huber Heights Arts Commission finalizes details for February art show; 12 artists signed

The Huber Heights Arts and Beautification Commission confirmed key logistics for its upcoming community art show during its Jan. 20 meeting, saying 12 artists have signed up and that judging will take place during the event.

Commissioners agreed artists should be set up by 11 a.m. and that judging would begin at noon, allowing visitors to view entries as judging occurs. The commission said display tables will be 6-foot tables in most cases; one artist is bringing their own easel and quilt displays. The commission also confirmed that artists may sell work at the show.

Commission members discussed awards and ribbons for multiple age groups. The commission suggested the board serve as the jury for awards, although members said a visiting city council member could be invited to present prizes if a council member chooses to attend. The board agreed that the commission itself would be prepared to award the ribbons if outside dignitaries are not available.

The commission discussed setup and staffing for the day, including unlocking and re-locking doors and providing door codes to volunteers. Members volunteered to be present for setup and some for the entire show; one member said she must leave by about 2:30 p.m. but would be present for judging. The group asked the city to run advertising for the show and confirmed the commission will provide schedule and performer details for social media updates.

Commissioners also discussed two scholarship awards tied to the arts program. Staff advised that IRS rules prevent classifying a scholarship as a competition award; as a result, the scholarships will be decided in a separate process in March. The commission agreed it can amend scholarship application criteria so participation in the art show would earn an applicant extra points but that the scholarships will be awarded independently of contest results. The commission discussed available scholarship funds and noted "$2,500 left in the pot," but did not specify final scholarship amounts or an exact payment schedule.

The commission asked staff to send artist and vendor instructions a week before the show and to confirm tablecloth and signage arrangements. Members also confirmed they will photograph nominated or winning homes and that winners traditionally receive an award at a subsequent council meeting.
