Members of the Salinas Historic Resources Board reviewed a revised Certificate of Appreciation design and requested an alternative that emphasizes historic built environment imagery to better align the award with the board’s mission.
Staff presented a draft certificate that incorporates the Salinas chrysanthemum symbol, an agricultural/bracero image and wording changes intended to prioritize historic preservation language. Several board members said the design is visually appealing but questioned the relevance of agricultural imagery for an award the board will give for preservation of structures and historic resources. One board member suggested replacing one or both round medallion images with photos or symbols of local historic buildings and presented a ghosted vintage Main Street photo as an option.
No formal action was taken. Staff and board members agreed to continue refining the certificate and to return with alternatives — including at least one that foregrounds architectural imagery — at the next meeting in January. The board noted the program and guidelines will be packaged for city council review before issuance, and staff said the certificate is planned for issuance in May to coincide with National Historic Resources Month.
Follow-up steps: staff will prepare alternate artwork and bring revised guidelines and application materials back to the board; the board will consider those materials before presenting a package to the city council for program approval.
