The United Nations reported fresh displacement in North Darfur after an escalation of hostilities around Zamzam displacement camp, and said a UN peacekeeper in South Sudan was injured by shrapnel while on patrol.
The developments matter because renewed fighting and blocked exit routes can rapidly worsen humanitarian conditions in areas already at risk of famine; injuries to peacekeepers can also hinder patrols and protection activities.
The briefing said about 5,500 people were displaced from Zamzam and sought safety in Shamal Jabal Mara in Central Darfur; UN and partner reports put the total newly displaced in Shamal Jabal Mara at more than 20,000. Aid agencies have provided food assistance to around 93,000 people and emergency shelter and supplies to some 53,000, according to the UN briefing.
The UN also reported that one of its peacekeepers in South Sudan was injured by shrapnel in Nasir County in Upper Nile State while on a preplanned patrol; the mission condemned the incident and said it is engaging with authorities and communities to restore calm.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, is scheduled to visit Sudan, South Sudan and Abiyah to discuss peacekeeping cooperation and to meet local authorities, mission leadership and civil society, the briefing said.
The UN did not provide names of the injured peacekeeper in South Sudan or precise timetables for the delivery of additional assistance. The briefing highlighted the need for safe access for humanitarian operations in affected areas.
