The City of Tulsa will begin installing automated water meters at more than 145,000 residential locations starting in 2024 and continuing over the next four years, city communications said. The program, called True Reads, aims to eliminate estimated bills, reduce property access needs, and cut meter-reading costs.
City staff described a three-step notice process before crews arrive: an online map showing active neighborhoods, a door hanger one to two weeks before installation, and a contractor knock on the day of work. "While your meter is being changed, you will be briefly without water for a maximum of 30 minutes," city communications said.
The city also said crews will perform a short lead service line inspection during the swap and post inspection results on the online map. "While we don't think there are many, if any, lead service lines remaining in our system, we do want to find, document, and remove any lead that may be left in our system," the city message stated.
After crews finish, residents are asked to run water for a few minutes to restore pressure and clear any temporary cloudiness. The city provided a URL for more information and an updated installation map: cityoftulsa.org/truereads.
No formal vote or council action was recorded in the provided materials about the program; the information was presented as a citizen-facing announcement. The timeline and scope were described as city plans rather than a finalized ordinance or contract award.
