Lake Forest council affirms regional board appointments after resident concerns about fire service and development

The Lake Forest City Council on Dec. 17 voted unanimously to approve staff-recommended appointments to regional boards, keeping current representatives in place and approving a personnel substitution on one sheriff's-department advisory board.

Before the vote, resident Andrew O'Connor and long-time resident Sean Fletcher used public comment to press the council on service and planning issues. O'Connor asked when an additional fire station would be built to serve tens of hundreds of new homes approved in recent years and criticized the council's coordination with fire and school officials. Fletcher warned that developers' minimum parking requirements and state occupancy ratios produce insufficient on-site parking at new high-density developments, forcing vehicles into surrounding neighborhoods and increasing crime and break-ins.

Council members responded briefly: one noted there are five stations serving parts of Lake Forest and praised the Orange County Fire Authority for its work, and council members discussed the constraints of prior development agreements and private-market investor purchases. The council's motion approved the staff list of appointments "keeping everything as it was," with a specific substitution to place a council member on the Orange County Sheriff's Department Local Remote Access Board in place of the prior designee. The motion passed unanimously.
