Riley County opens RFQ for 2022 sales-tax bridge program; replacement estimate for first set ~$2.6 million

Riley County public works staff on Jan. 2 opened a request for qualifications for infrastructure work under the county’s 2022 sales-tax program, seeking engineering proposals for six bridge replacements and three culvert projects.
John (public works) presented images and locations for the first group of structures, including Crooked Creek, Green Randolph, Kansas Avenue, Lasaida, Soul Creek and Sunset bridges, plus three culverts located in the county’s north and south. The county estimated design and construction of the initial set of structures at about $2.6 million. Public works staff said 17 additional structures and other large projects remain under consideration for future RFQs.
The board discussed a higher-cost bridge that provides access to a small number of residences on East 56th; staff estimated that structure alone could cost about $7.8 million to replace and said alternatives such as a relocation of access were being evaluated because the road and bridge serve primarily agricultural access for a small number of landowners.
Under the RFQ process, consultants will submit proposals for individual structures from a prioritized list; the county expects separate selections for each structure rather than awarding all work to one firm. Commissioners moved to open the RFQ and unanimously approved the motion. Staff said RFQs for remaining projects will follow in coming months as the county programs further phases of the sales-tax-funded work.
