Carmel Prepares will hold a one-hour public session on building a disaster kit on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Sunset Center’s Carpenter Hall from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., a city briefing said. The session will feature information on kit contents and a question period; a later Nov. 8 session will include hands-only CPR instruction.
The event was described at a recent Carmel-by-the-Sea meeting by Wanda Boleman, a guest on the topic, who said the Sept. 6 session will pair a talk on disaster kits with first-aid training from CERT team member Aletha Parker. “It’s going to be really interesting to learn skills,” Boleman said. “It’s important that that we learn these skills because there’s gonna be times in disasters when we have to wait for emergency responders.”
Aletha Parker, identified at the meeting as the EMT program director for MPC College, will lead or support the CERT training segments, organizers said. The Sept. 6 session will be discussion-focused with staff and volunteers available to answer questions; organizers said the Nov. 8 session will include hands-on CPR instruction.
The city encouraged attendees to bring family members and neighbors. Organizers also said there will be a raffle and breakfast at the Sept. 6 session. No registration fees or cost details were specified in the meeting remarks.
The city promoted additional community first-aid training available on the peninsula, including American Red Cross classes, and encouraged at least one trained family member per household. Details for Carmel Prepares sessions and any updates were given at the meeting and will be posted with other community event notices.
