Board reviews outdoor lighting draft; flagpole lighting, wording and permit packet changes flagged for revision

The New Shoreham Planning Board reviewed a draft outdoor lighting ordinance and example diagrams at its July 9 meeting and asked staff to make editorial corrections and add guidance to the zoning application materials.
Members discussed how to treat flagpole lighting and whether illumination should be directed upward or downward; staff noted that low-lumen upward lighting is permitted in some cases and the board expressed a preference to specify lighting from the base upward for flags. The board also identified duplicate items and missing imperative phrasing (for example adding the word “shall” in certain subsections).
Board members agreed it would be helpful to include the lighting guidance or a note about the lighting ordinance with building- and zoning-permit application packets so applicants would be informed up front. Staff was asked to add an item to the zoning plan review form or application materials to present the lighting rules to applicants during review.
Planner Jen and Peter were asked to correct typographical issues and to return a revised version next month; no final vote was taken at the July meeting.
