Denton County Commissioners proclaim October 2025 as Denton County Archaeology Month

The Denton County Commissioners Court voted unanimously on Oct. 28, 2025, to proclaim October 2025 as Denton County Archaeology Month and to support public education about local archaeology.
Gary Hayden, identified in the meeting as chair of the archaeology committee, described local events planned for the month, including the Denton Dig It Archaeology Fair at the historic park. Hayden said the fair, returning for its fourth year, has doubled in size from the prior year and will include demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages, including flint knapping, a sandbox dig for children and displays contributed by local groups.
Kelsey, representing the Denton County Office of History and Culture, noted that the Denton County Courthouse Museum is certified through a Texas Historical Commission curatorial facility certification program and is authorized to house archaeological items found on public lands owned by the state of Texas. The proclamation text included recognition of the Texas Historical Commission, the Council of Texas Archaeologists, universities and local archaeological societies as partners in Texas Archaeology Month.
Commissioner Mitchell moved to approve the proclamation; Commissioner Edmondson seconded. The court voted unanimously to adopt the proclamation and then took a group photograph, the transcript shows.
The proclamation cites the museum’s role in curatorial certification and encourages public engagement with archaeology through the county’s Office of History and Culture and partner organizations. The Denton Dig It Archaeology Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the historic park, according to Hayden.
