Sheriff reports drop in major crimes; WSS warehouse robbery under investigation, Community Night Out planned

The Carson Sheriff Station and LA County Fire Department provided monthly updates to the Carson City Council on Aug. 5, reporting a slight downward trend in major crimes and summarizing recent incidents and public-safety outreach.
Captain Kathleen (Carson Sheriff Station) said Part 1 crimes are “continuing to trend down at 2.6%.” She described a July 31 robbery at the WSS shoe warehouse on Wilmington and Jama that involved a forced entry; the station estimated about $36,000 in stolen merchandise and about $33,000 in damages and said two suspects had been taken into custody. The captain said the station is coordinating with WSS management and a regional retail-task-force investigation.
Captain Kathleen also described other department activities: a “Coffee with a Cop” event intended to engage the public and a July 16 bike/pedestrian enforcement operation that resulted in 55 vehicle stops and three towed vehicles. She invited the public to Community Night Out scheduled for Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring food and family activities.
LA County Fire Department battalion chief Vanilla reported July responses: 863 total calls, including 43 fire responses and nearly 700 emergency medical responses. Of the 43 fire responses, two structure fires displaced four residents; the Red Cross was contacted and assistance was provided. The chief said about 131 patients were transported with advanced life support and about 300 with basic life support; roughly 140 callers refused transport after treatment.
Council members asked follow-up questions about specific incidents and patrol coverage in problem areas; Captain Kathleen said motorcycle officers operate on different shifts and can be effective in deterring speeding when deployed.
