The West Warwick Town Council took several routine and financial actions at its Feb. 4 meeting and recorded decisions on licenses, appointments and capital projects.
Key outcomes
- Senior center temporary transfer: The council approved a resolution temporarily transferring funds to the West Warwick Senior Center to address a projected cash-flow shortfall. Town staff said the center anticipated needing approximately $89,000 to finish fiscal 2025 operations while awaiting an employee retention credit payment from the IRS (staff said that credit had been approved but the timing of payment was uncertain). The council voted to provide the temporary funding; staff said the center will return to the council with its FY26 needs in coming months.
- Town Hall HVAC replacement: The council awarded the town-hall air-conditioning replacement project to Prime Heating and Cooling LLC of Smithfield for $240,000 and authorized encumbering up to $25,000 for related electrical work, for a possible total of $265,000. Funding sources identified included a state Office of Energy Resources (OER) grant of $143,185.93 and up to $121,814.07 from unallocated capital funds.
- Routine licenses and reappointments: The council approved a parade license for the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick’s parade scheduled for Sunday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.; it also confirmed reappointments to the library board of trustees and approved several other board vacancies and appointments announced during the meeting.
- Consent agenda and minutes: The council approved the consent agenda, including minutes from the Jan. 21, 2025 regular meeting.
Items noted but not approved: The council considered a partial release of a Shoreline Properties improvement bond for the Carlton Avenue subdivision; that motion failed on a 2-2 tie and therefore did not pass.
Other business
The council discussed a nonbinding planning direction for the former Compton Mill site and agreed to await the completion of a RIDEM phase 2 study before making final decisions on reuse. The council also discussed possibly adding charter amendments to an anticipated school bond referendum and received an update that the school building committee planned to finalize a RIDE Stage 2 submission and appear before a joint meeting with the council in mid-February.
The council voted to enter executive session at the end of the meeting.
