Council approves 2025 Percival Plinth public-sculpture exhibition and public purchase vote

The council approved the Arts Commission’s recommendation of up to 18 sculptures for the 2025 Percival Plinth Project exhibition; the public will vote in July on one work for purchase (up to $10,000). The Olympia City Council on Feb. 25 approved the Arts Commission’s recommended lineup of sculptures for the 2025 Percival Plinth Project, an annual public-art exhibition along Percival Landing.
Stephanie Johnson, arts program manager and staff liaison to the Arts Commission, told the council the jury reviewed 26 submissions and recommended 18 works for the exhibition. Artists receive $1,000 for the loan of each sculpture; during July a public vote will select one artwork for purchase at a price up to $10,000. The selected piece will be displayed in front of City Hall for an additional year and then placed in the city’s permanent collection.
Kathy Dorgan, chair of the Arts Commission, read short descriptions of the selected works to give council a sense of each piece’s materials and intent. The jury and staff screened submissions for structural safety, artistic quality and diversity of materials and styles.
Councilmember Green moved to approve the Arts Commission recommendation; the motion passed by voice vote.
