Mercer Island planning commission unanimously backs omnibus Title 19 amendments to implement state housing and permit rules

The Mercer Island Planning Commission on Oct. 8 voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council adopt an omnibus ordinance of amendments to Title 19 of the Mercer Island City Code (PCB 2025-18) intended to implement recent state laws on housing production and permit streamlining.

The recommendation follows a staff presentation and a continued public hearing that opened at 6:04 p.m. and closed at 6:05 p.m.; no members of the public signed up to speak on the item. If the City Council follows the commission's recommendation, the item is scheduled for first reading Nov. 4 and a second reading Nov. 18, with an effective date expected by the end of the year.

Principal planner Adam Zack told commissioners the purpose of the meeting was "to complete the public hearing and get arrive at your recommendation, for the draft code amendments for this omnibus legislation, for streamlining regulations and, housing development."
