Council names Luther Burbank pickleball courts for late council member Jake Jacobsen

The Mercer Island City Council on Oct. 7 voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 1682, naming the pickleball courts at Luther Burbank Park the Jake Jacobsen Pickleball Courts.
Council member Randell moved the resolution; Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum seconded. The council voted aye (Mayor Saleem Nies, Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum, Council members Andrault, Reynolds, Becker and Weinberg); Council member Weicker was absent.
Mayor Nies said the item was intended as a memorial while the current seated council remained in place. Council members who spoke described Jacobsen as a dedicated public servant who worked to bring people together; Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum called the naming “a small tribute” to Jacobsen’s public service. Council member Reynolds asked why the courts were chosen; Mayor Nies and others said pickleball had become a unifying community activity and cited recent community events and fundraising presentations as examples of community-building around the sport.
The resolution is ceremonial; the council indicated signage and an event will follow when the sign is installed.
