River Falls resident urges stronger fishing rules rather than paying for dam removal

William Hanson, a River Falls resident, used the meeting's public-comment period to urge the Municipal Utility Advisory Board to consider fishing regulation changes instead of spending city or utility funds on dam removal.
Hanson said a study published Oct. 10 in Science Advances — which he described as work by state, federal and University of Wisconsin researchers — examined more than 500 fish population groups over four decades in Minnesota and Wisconsin and found fishing had a greater impact than warming on those populations. "Perhaps here in River Falls, rather than waste for spending of tax and utility rate payer money for dam removal, we could consider upgraded fishing guidelines as the best and most economical long term fish population management tool for the Kinney," Hanson said, using the name he provided in his remarks.
Hanson identified himself as living on Fifth Street in River Falls and concluded by thanking the board for its service. The board did not take action on the comment during the meeting.
