Danville honors Fire Marshal Scott Lawson on retirement after 23 years

Fire Marshal Scott Lawson was recognized by the Danville City Commission on Oct. 13 as he retires after 23 years in fire service.
Chief McGurdy opened the presentation, saying Lawson “served as our fire marshal for the last 5 years” and that Lawson’s career had been “defined by dedication, professionalism, and courage.” The commission presented Lawson with a ceremonial helmet and a city gift in recognition of his service.
Lawson told the commission he was grateful for the career and thanked “the good Lord” and his family, adding that the firehouse crew had become a “second family.” “My wife and my family — not being there for Christmas, Thanksgiving, the holidays, the birthdays — we work crazy shifts,” Lawson said. He also thanked the commission for listening to the department’s concerns.
The International Association of Firefighters local president (identified in the meeting as the union representative) also spoke, calling Lawson “a great mentor” and presenting a token of appreciation from the union.
The commission noted Lawson’s retirement will remove years of experience from the department but expressed appreciation for his service and leadership to the community.
The commission closed the tribute with photographs and brief remarks. No formal action was required or taken on this agenda item.
