Boyle County issues proclamation for Mind and Memory Care Awareness Week; veterans groups donate to refurbished memorial

The Boyle County Fiscal Court unanimously approved a proclamation designating the week of Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 as Mind and Memory Care Awareness Week and encouraged public participation in local memory-care events, officials said.

Judge Trillie L. Bottom read the proclamation, noting national observances for dementia and Alzheimerawareness and local events culminating in a theatrical performance, Remember Balloons, at the Boyle County Performing Arts Center on Nov. 4. Community providers who serve older adults and memory-care residents stood before the court during the proclamation; Mandy (H Wells Senior Services) and Jessica Riley (McDowell Place of Danville) spoke about local memory-cafe programs and services for caregivers.

Separately, veteransorganizations described a recent refurbishment of the veterans memorial outside the courthouse and presented funding and certificates to the county. Jack Hendricks, representing American Legion Post 46 and VFW Post 36 34, thanked the court and introduced post leaders who detailed their local charitable spending.

Tony Cromwell (American Legion Post 46) and Donnie Knatzer (VFW post 36 34 commander) described veterans services, outreach, and assistance to local veterans. VFW Quartermaster Ken Portwood and others presented a check to the county for $3,750 as a contribution toward the memorial project; veteran leaders said the posts and other donors helped restore the site and plan a Hall of Fame addition.

Judge Bottom said the court will hold a Hall of Fame monument dedication on Nov. 10, following the Nov. 10 fiscal court meeting, and invited the public to a reception at the courthouse after the dedication. The court did not take further funding actions at the meeting beyond accepting the donation and scheduling the dedication.
