The Lyon County School District Board of Trustees on Oct. 28 appointed Cali Day to fill the vacant District 6 seat after interviewing five candidates.
Board President Hendricks said the board conducted individual, sequestered interviews and asked each candidate a fixed set of six questions. Trustee Tony Farr nominated Day; Trustee Bull seconded the nomination. The motion carried and Day took the oath of office at the meeting: “I, Cali Day, do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of The United States, the constitution of the state of Nevada, and the laws thereof,” Day recited while being sworn in.
The board described the interview process to the public in advance. Each candidate was brought into the meeting room one at a time, allowed 20 minutes to answer six questions posed by trustees, and then the board discussed its top choices before taking a vote. Several trustees said they weighed community ties, experience with local schools and demonstrated ability to advocate for Lyon County at the state level in their selections.
Public speakers and attendees urged the board to appoint candidates with experience in special education, community engagement and fiscal stewardship. Several Dayton-area residents and community leaders publicly supported Day during the public comment period before the vote.
Day signed the district’s code of conduct and accepted the committee assignments offered to new trustees before the meeting recessed. She was then sworn in and immediately assigned as an alternate representative to the NIAA and as a primary representative to the Student Attendance Advisory Board, per the board’s committee assignment procedure.
The board did not release individual roll-call vote names in the meeting minutes; the motion to appoint Day passed and the oath was administered before adjournment.
