Speedway Schools' Veterans Day parade approved by council

The event will be supervised by the school resource officer and involves about 500 students and staff.
The Speedway Town Council on Oct. 27 unanimously approved a special event request from Speedway Schools to hold a Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11.
Rick Roseborough, principal of Speedway Junior High, told the council the plan calls for a staging area behind the junior high with participants starting at about 9 a.m. and the parade beginning around 9:30 a.m. The route will loop around the Junior High and Fisher Elementary twice; students will line sidewalks to salute veterans, the student council will provide coffee and breakfast items to veterans waiting in their cars, and the junior high band and art students will participate.
Roseborough said approximately 500 students and faculty will attend and that school resource officer Jeremy Howard will oversee and supervise the event. He explained sign-up sheets for veterans have been distributed through the schools and indicated organizers want veterans’ names on vehicle placards as they pass.
Councilors asked logistical questions about fees and enforcement. Grant Kleinheinz said no street closures are planned and that the only direct fee would be for police services if the department provides off-duty officer support; otherwise, organizers requested waiver of typical fees. The council voted to approve the special event request, 5–0.
