ZBA approves front-deck expansion for Westchester Street homeowners

The Long Beach Zoning Board of Appeals voted to grant a side-yard variance allowing Patrick and Mary O’Donnell to build a 10-by-15-foot deck that will wrap from the front around the side of their home at 723 Westchester Street.
The applicants told the board the proposed cantilevered deck would provide a seating area with a view toward the water at the end of the block. They said the deck would extend around an existing small front deck and would not create sight-line problems for immediate neighbors. Several neighbors, including Greg Quinn and Adan McPhee, spoke in support, describing the O’Donnells as active community members.
Chairman Morelli introduced the motion to grant and Commissioner DePasquale seconded. Commissioners voted unanimously in favor and the board approved the requested side-yard variance. The board’s approval permits the applicants to proceed to the building-permit stage, subject to standard code compliance and inspections.
