Sheriff's office reports activity totals and flags seasonal budget shortfall; tax bills to mail this week

A representative of the sheriff's office reported arrest, citation and call-handling totals for August and September and told the Hardin County Fiscal Court on Oct. 28 that the office is carrying a temporary budget shortfall ahead of tax collection.
The sheriff's report cited the following operational totals for August and September combined: 181 arrests, 335 citations, 206 warrants, 41 civil actions, 3,082 complaint calls, 129 accidents and 162 criminal cases. The report listed 921 school safety checks, 168 violation warnings, 2,234 attempts to serve, 128 records checks, 133 CCDW checks, and 1,708 vehicle inspections. Court transports included 75 adult transports and three juvenile transports; there were 67 in-state transports.
The speaker said financials for September showed the sheriff’s office “over $900,000 in the red” at this time of year, which the office attributed to the timing of tax collections; the speaker said the county typically receives tax commission payments after collection season and expected that to correct the year-to-date shortfall. The speaker also noted that about 87% of the sheriff’s budget is manpower and called attention to vehicle maintenance, fuel and insurance costs.
On tax billing, the speaker said tax bills would be mailed “sometime this week, maybe tomorrow or the next day,” and said the county’s discount period runs Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. The sheriff's representative advised residents who do not receive a bill by the second week of November to contact the office to request another copy.
The report was presented for information; the court took no formal action on the sheriff’s report during the meeting.
