Teachers from Crowder's Creek Elementary described a series of inquiry labs that the school hosted for district colleagues, showing classroom strategies meant to increase student ownership and resilience.
Joanne Piazza, one of Crowder's Creek's two media specialists, said the inquiry-lab visitors “saw how students were given that voice and choice” through activities such as choice boards, goal setting and data tracking, and that teachers used end-of-class check-ins to prompt students to reflect on confidence and next steps. Piazza said resilience is an instructional focus at Crowder's Creek and that the check-in questions are intended to help students “self evaluate and understand … how to overcome” challenges.
District staff and visiting teachers attended multiple classrooms during the inquiry labs to observe practices in action. Presenters described flexible learning environments, student-led explanations at inquiry stations and quick follow-up professional development sessions at their own school so teachers could adapt approaches the next day.
Presenters said the school’s volunteer Impact Team expanded from about five members to 12 after last year’s work; that growth allowed Crowder's Creek to host high school and middle school teachers who had not visited the campus previously. Staff said many visitors later contacted presenters asking how to adopt specific strategies.
Teachers from Crowder's Creek and Griggs Road schools also appeared on a state-hosted podcast, Make It Personalized Learning, to discuss inquiry-lab practices and advice for educators beyond the district.
Presenters thanked district administrators and the district’s innovation coach for supporting the inquiry labs and said the labs were part of the districtwide personalized-learning framework.
The school’s presentation to the board was descriptive; no board action was recorded on the inquiry labs.
