Wayne County gets near-$1M from insurer as structural assessment continues after courthouse attic fire

Wayne County officials updated commissioners Oct. 6 on recovery work after a fire in the courthouse attic. County staff and outside adjusters have been assessing structural and environmental issues, and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) issued a check for $995,000 to initiate replacement and mitigation work.
County staff said adjusters from Sedgwick and engineers from MKA have been on site, and the electrical engineer completed attic testing before staff scheduled a structural engineer to inspect the attic and roof. The adjuster told the board that, based on initial inspections, the entire roof may not need to be removed; the adjuster emphasized that the structural engineer's report will be the final determination.
Servpro has begun drying operations inside the building, and staff reported lab results showing no asbestos detected in samples taken from the facility. The county's adjuster recommended actions to reduce ongoing expense, such as using county inmate labor for removal where appropriate and buying a storage container rather than renting multiple trailers, according to meeting comments.
The county administrator said once the building is declared dry and the structural report is complete, the county will move to restoration planning and will have a clearer cost estimate. County staff noted that ACCG's early $995,000 payment will allow the county to begin paying invoices for mitigation and related replacement items.
