Hurricane Valley Fire District reports record May call volume, wildland deployments

Chief Tyler Ames of the Hurricane Valley Fire Special Service District told the Rockville Town Council on Wednesday that May was the busiest single month in the district’s history.
Ames said the district logged more than 600 calls for service in May and that the agency is preparing for a busy summer that could push monthly volumes toward 700 calls. “Our most frequent call for the month of May was vehicle accidents,” Ames said, noting several serious crashes including multiple fatal collisions on I‑15 and one in Rockville.
Council members heard that the district’s wildland crew is regularly deployed out of state; Ames said one wildland crew member recently returned from California and another was en route there, but emphasized that the district’s on‑duty crews remain staffed locally and are not sent on those extended deployments. He described routine summer call volumes as typically ranging from about 55 to 70 calls per month in prior years and said the May surge is significantly above that historical range.
The report did not include requests for specific council action. Council members thanked Ames for the update and moved to the next agenda item.
Looking ahead, Ames and council members noted they expect continued high demand for emergency response over the summer and encouraged residents to exercise caution on local roads and when recreating outdoors.
