County staff updated the Placerville meeting on the Down Valley Connector Trail feasibility study, saying the three‑mile trail from the county’s Down Valley park to the Saw Pit Mercantile corridor had been divided into five segments and that segments 1 (near the park) and 5 (near Salt Lake/Mercantile) were recommended for early pursuit because they offer immediate community benefit.
Staff said the study, conducted with consultants, identified the trail alignment mostly within CDOT right-of-way and that ADA requirements increased estimated costs. Staff reported recent positive news that the project was given priority status by the Gunnison Valley Transportation Region (GVTPR) and that the prioritization could open multi‑year funding opportunities. The county said it will pursue separate grants for engineering and design, which staff said would strengthen the project’s case for regional construction funding.
Staff noted the trail concept includes two bridges and would connect to the county’s M59 River Trail; design and construction remain contingent on funding, environmental review and CDOT coordination.
Staff committed to additional community meetings for affected segments and to posting updates on the county website.
