County shows Placerville Front Street concept plans funded by EPA planning grant

Janet Cast, Parks and Open Space project lead, presented concept storyboards for a Front Street revitalization effort funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency planning grant that focuses on repurposing and revitalizing historic structures and on area-wide planning.
Cast summarized a public meeting on May 14 and walked attendees through storyboards and community comment markings—green dots for support, red for opposition, and detailed post-it notes—saying feedback is still being collected and the display materials would remain available for later comment. Concepts shown included narrowing or delineating traffic near commercial storefronts, re-locating the bus stop, closing one curb cut onto State Highway 145, adding plantings and parklets, and redesigning parking and loading zones to improve pedestrian safety.
Why it matters: the proposals aim to slow vehicle traffic through the downtown area, improve pedestrian connections to the post office and commercial nodes, and support modest economic/placemaking measures in a small commercial district.
Cast said the planning grant is a study and design grant; implementation of the proposed measures would require additional funding. The county has involved CDOT in conversations because the highway right-of-way and bus-stop locations require state review and cooperation; CDOT staff had been invited to the May meeting but were not available. Cast said the project team has considered turning radii for deliveries and 18-wheelers and has consulted local business owners about loading and delivery needs.
Ending: Cast invited residents to leave written comments on the storyboards after the meeting or to meet individually; she said staff will continue design outreach and would seek additional grant funds to carry concepts into construction if the community supports them.
