County presents Front Street design options funded by EPA planning grant

Janet Cast, San Miguel County Parks and Open Space staff, presented storyboards and community feedback for proposed Front Street improvements in Placerville funded through an EPA revitalization and historic-structure planning grant.
Cast said the grant supports repurposing and revitalizing historic structures and allows for area-wide planning concepts. At a May 14 community meeting, residents placed colored dots and left notes on storyboards to indicate support or concerns for several design options. Cast summarized that the ideas aim to better delineate traffic flow in front of businesses, slow vehicle speeds, relocate the bus stop, close a curb cut at the base of Griffith Avenue and add landscaping, flower boxes and potential parklet decking to make the downtown more pedestrian-friendly.
Cast said the proposals had been developed with input from local businesses including Mercantile and Telluride Moto and with a consultant design team that considered loading and delivery turning radiuses for large delivery vehicles. She emphasized that the storyboards are conceptual and that additional grant funding and engineering would be required for construction.
Cast invited residents to review the storyboards after the meeting and to add notes — county staff said they will collect further comment and continue community engagement before pursuing construction funding.
County staff said CDOT has been part of the conversations about possible curb changes and sidewalk improvements and that any construction would require additional CDOT coordination and potential grant awards.
