ARB approves larger front porch at 236 N. Roosevelt with preference for painted or light finish

On Oct. 9 the Bexley Architectural Review Board approved a certificate of appropriateness to replace a small covered stoop at 236 North Roosevelt with a larger, centered porch, subject to final coordination with the design consultant on roof slope, railing and column finish.
Board members and the applicant discussed several options for materials and finishes. The board expressed a preference for an all-white treatment with black railings for scale and simplicity, but allowed the owner to pursue natural-stained timber columns if the beam and ceiling were similarly finished and the overall porch detailing remained light in scale. The board recommended use of AZEK/TimberTech trim/skirt rather than composite decking where trim durability and clean edges matter.
Why it matters: The project is in a part of Bexley with many modest colonial/cape-style homes. The ARB said the porch should be proportionate to the house and maintain the neighborhood’s simple character.
Votes and conditions: The motion to approve the stoop replacement was unanimous. Conditions: work with the residential design consultant on reducing roof slope if feasible, coordinating railing style, choosing column/beam/ceiling finish (board preference: all-white with black railing), and using an appropriate skirt board material.
