Sedgwick County has installed a new outdoor exercise area at Sedgwick County Park aimed at adults 60 and older but open to everyone, county staff said.
The equipment, located across from the Boundless Playground, is intended to support the weekly recommendation for physical activity by allowing users to do aerobic training, strengthen core muscles, and improve balance, a staff member said. "Get active in nature. That's the name and goal of Sedgwick County's new exercise part designed specifically for older adults but open to everyone," the staff member (Speaker 1) said.
A resident who spoke about the site described it as an opportunity for intergenerational activity. "It's a great opportunity for adults over 60 to work out with their daughter or the granddaughter or grandson. And this is 1 of the few places you could do an exercise routine outside and for free," the resident (Speaker 2) said.
Another staff member summarized the equipment's scope: "So it includes everything that is recommended for a weekly allowance of physical activity. And so these allow for people to do some aerobic training, get their heart rate up, but also strengthen their core, improve balance, and just general strength," (Speaker 3) said.
Signs at the park explain how to use the equipment, and QR codes posted on the signs link to video demonstrations, officials said. The project was funded through a federal grant in partnership with Sedgwick County, the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging and the state of Kansas, according to the staff remarks. The area is publicly accessible and intended to provide exercise and social opportunities for older adults and other park visitors.
No dollar amounts, formal vote outcomes, or implementation deadlines were specified in the remarks recorded in the meeting transcript.
The county said the outdoor fitness area complements other park amenities and is open to anyone who wishes to use it.
